Unidentified Flying Mater is the fifth episode of Cars Toons: Mater's Tall Tales.

Plot[]

At Luigi's Casa Della Tires, Guido tries to remove a hubcap from a customer's tire and ends up flinging it out of the window. It flies past Mater and Lightning McQueen, who are driving along Main Street. Mater immediately tells Lightning McQueen that it was a UFO, but Lightning McQueen tells Mater ''That was a hubcap'' but Mater insisted that it was a UFO and he knew because he'd seen one. Lightning McQueen says, "What?!" and Mater begins his story.

On a crystal clear night (except for several storm clouds building up behind him), Mater is driving towards a level crossing when the lights start flashing. Mater was puzzled because he can't see any trains coming, but when he looks to his left, he sees a glowing white buck-toothed UFO staring at him. He jumps back in fright and starts quivering when the UFO smiles at Mater. Mater then introduces himself and the UFO introduces himself his name is Mator. Mater then takes Mator to his "liters": a pile of oil cans. Whilst drinking, Mater teaches Mator to say, "dad-gum" and also teaches Mator how to tip tractors and drive backwards. Mator also teaches Mater how to fly like a spaceship for Halloween, which startles Fillmore as the stop was turning red yellow and green without control, Fillmore was surprised, Mater says ''Hi'' to Fillmore, Fillmore got scared, and Fillmore pushed his oil can foward, and Sarge missed everything because Sarge was sleeping. As they start flying around Willy's Butte, spotlights surround them and Mator got captured. and Mater was flying to the Area 51 to save Mator, and then Mater secretly follows them and realizes that his new friend has been captured by the military forces. and then he sneaks into the base using his flying technique, quick movements, and Mater disguise himself to save Mator.

Lightning McQueen doesn't believe Mater's story, but Mater tells Lightning McQueen "You was there, too!"

As the military forces chase Mater and Mator, Lightning McQueen joins them out of nowhere. Suddenly, Mator's Mama Ship arrives and takes the trio away. Mater thanks Mama Ship, and then Mater ask Mama Ship ''hey do you think you drop us of at home?'' and then She drops off Lightning McQueen and Mater back home before she was leaving. Lightning McQueen and Mater ended up at Tow Mater Towing and Salvage, and then Mater says ''Thank you'' to Mama Ship.

Back in Radiator Springs, Lightning McQueen still doesn't believe Mater, so Mater tries to show Lightning McQueen that he can actually fly. As he tries, his engine makes a horrible spluttering noise and Lightning McQueen drives away saying ''Whoa, oh Mater please'', he was begging Mater to stop. and Lightning McQueen fails to see Mater being a spaceship for Halloween, and Mater was actually flying past Fillmore and Sarge. Fillmore was shocked saying "Far out!" and Sarge suddenly woke up.

In the final scene, Mater meets Mator up in space and they fly away together.

Characters[]

Trivia[]

  • This is the only episode in the series in which Mater does not tell Lightning that he used to be something.
  • All of Fillmore's dialogue in this episode is stock audio from the first Cars movie. He is voiced by George Carlin, who died in June 2008. This also marks the final time that George Carlin voices Fillmore. Lloyd Sherr takes over the role from Cars 2 onwards, following Carlin's death.
  • This marks the first time in Cars Toons that a car that is not part of the main cast from Cars is seen in Radiator Springs (Luigi and Guido's customer). It is also the first time that the Tractors appear in the Cars Toons shorts.
  • Parking Area 51, the place where Mator is taken to, is a reference to Area 51.
  • This was the first time in the Cars series where Mater was flying. The second time was in Cars 2, and the third time was in Air Mater.
  • This was the first space-themed episode in Cars Toons, the second was Moon Mater.
  • When the traffic light changes lights repeatedly very quickly, Fillmore says the same "Whoa!" that he made in the first film when McQueen falls into the cactus during his race against Doc Hudson.
  • This is the third time that Lightning McQueen wears his Piston Cup livery. The first is Cars, and the second time is Rescue Squad Mater.
  • The ending of this episode is a lot like the classic ending of Star Trek episodes when the USS Starship Enterprise flies off in outer space.
  • Fillmore seeing Mater fly pass him and pushing away his biofuel is similar to a scene from a Russian science-fiction movie "Black Lightning", where a drunk man sees a flying car and throws out the alcohol bottle.
  • During the chase, Lightning McQueen still has his paint job back.

Goofs[]

  • When Mater says, "Hey, Fillmore!" the DVD and Blu-ray subtitles mistakenly spell Fillmore's name as "Filmore" (without one of the "l"s).
